David Gates is the author of two novels, Jernigan (Knopf, 1991), a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize; Preston Falls (Knopf, 1998), a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award; and a collection of stories, The Wonders of the Invisible World (Knopf, 1999), also a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Previously a staff writer for Newsweek, he has been featured in Esquire, GQ, Grand Street, Ploughshares, TriQuarterly, Best American Short Stories, The O. Henry Prize Stories anthology, and elsewhere. He lives in NYC and in Granville, NY.
Roxana Robinson is the author of four novels and three short story
collections, as well as a biography of Georgia O’Keeffe. Four of these were named Notable Books of the Year by The New York Times. Her most recent novel, Cost (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2008), was chosen by The Washington Post as one of the Five Best Fiction Books of the Year and by The Wall Street Journal as one of the Year’s Twelve Best. It won the Maine Publishers and Writers’ Alliance Fiction Award and was long-listed for the Dublin Impac Prize. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Harper’s Magazine, The New York Times, Best American Short Stories, and Vogue, among other publications. She has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the MacDowell Colony. She was named Literary Lion by the New York Public Library. Charlene Choi is a Canadian writer, based in Brooklyn, who has recently been selected by the National Arts Club and the Page Series as one of New York City’s Best Emerging Writers. She has studied at the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop Graduate Summer Program and the New School’s Graduate Writing Program and received her MFA in Fiction in 2010. She has served as Associate Editor of LIT Magazine in Manhattan and Books Contributor to The Brooklyn Rail. Her nonfiction has been published in The Brooklyn Rail. Her fiction has been shortlisted by The Yale Review and was featured at The Pierogi Press & Gallery Reading Series this year. Currently, she lives in Iowa City, IA. Michael Idov was born in Riga, Latvia, and moved to the U.S. at the age of 16. He is the author of the 2009 novel Ground Up (Farrar, Straus and Giroux) and its Russian translation, Kofemolka. His nonfiction has appeared in New York Magazine, where he is a contributing editor, as well as The Wall Street Journal, GQ, and elsewhere. Nick Forrest grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, moved to Philadelphia
to earn his BA in English Literature and Studio Art from Swarthmore College, and attended the University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop Summer Graduate Poetry Program in 2010. He is the recipient of the 2008 Lois Morrell and John Russell Hayes Prize for poetry and the Mahasweta Devi and Gloria Anzaldúa Award for the Arts. His play Meeley: Or the Fun of It was featured in the 2009 Philadelphia Fringe Festival and selected for production at Swarthmore College in 2010. Kevin Trageser, our featured contributing photographer, was born in Mississippi and raised in New Jersey. He has lived in Colorado, London, Los Angeles, and New York. His work has appeared in The New Yorker (alongside Don Delillo’s short story, “Still-Life”), i-D, Dazed & Confused, Theme, Tokion, Spin, Blender, and COLUMN. His photos have been exhibited at Design Commission in Seattle, 255 Gallery in New York, and at Colette in Paris.
